Q: How do I setup my computer for high-speed Internet access through VBNet?
A:
Please visit our setup page for detailed instructions on configuring your computer.

Q: Does VBNet have a firewall?
A:
No, VBNet does not have a firewall that blocks outgoing connections to the Internet. However, due to VBNet's use of Network Address Translation (NAT), you can not run a server on your computer that is accessible from the Internet. In effect, this blocks most incoming connections from the Internet to your computer. While this helps to protect you from malicious Internet users, certain programs that require the use of servers may or may not run correctly. VBNet does this so that the bandwidth available to everyone does not get bogged down when one customer tries to run a heavy-bandwidth server. This allows everyone to have the fastest connection speeds to the Internet possible.

Q: Why don't some of my multiplayer games work?
A:
They may not work because they require a server setup on your local computer and because of VBNet's use of NAT. See the questions "Does VBNet have a firewall?" and "What is NAT?"

Q: What is NAT? Why does VBNet use it?
A:
NAT (Network Address Translation) is a technique that allows a group of Internet users to share one or a few IP addresses. When your traffic passes through a NAT-enabled router, the router changes your IP address from the one on your computer to the router's IP address. When your traffic comes back to the router, the router knows that the traffic is destined for your computer so it changes the destination IP address back to your computer.

Q: Does VBNet support multiple computers with hubs on one jack?
A: No. As a VBNet customer, you are entitled to use one computer per jack.

Q: My connection seems slow. What can I do?
A:
VBNet works very hard to make sure that the connection between your computer and the Internet is as fast as possible. Unfortunately, VBNet has no control over the speeds of the Internet beyond our main office and we can't make individual web sites any faster. If your connection speeds are only slow to one or a few web sites, there may not be much that VBNet can do to help speed up that connection. If you find that all web sites are slow (including large web sites such as www.yahoo.com or www.msn.com), please contact our technical support number (407-996-8002) and let us know the date and time of the problem and what web sites you thought were slow. We will determine where the problem is, and if it's under our control, we will do our best to fix it.

Q: What kind of equipment and cables do I need to make this work?
A:
In order to use VBNet's Internet service, you need certain pieces of equipment. We have an ethernet based network so you need an ethernet card for your computer. That ethernet card needs to support 10-BaseT connections (almost all do). You will also need an ethernet cable (also called a Category 5 cable or a Cat-5 cable) that looks similar to a phone cable, but the jacks on the ends are slightly wider. These items are usually available at local computer and electronics stores such as Best Buy or the UCF Computer Store. If you have any more questions about what you need, please call us at 407-996-8002.

Q: Can I run a server?
A: Unfortunately, you can not run servers on our networks. Please see the question "Does VBNet have a firewall?"

Q: What is VBNet's mail server address?
A: Our SMTP server address is "mail.vbnet.net".

Q: I get a SMTP Relay error when sending e-mail. How do I fix it?
A:
The error message you're seeing is because the SMTP server you're trying to use has access controls on it that prohibit you from using it from another network. While you're using VBNet's network, you may use our SMTP server to send your e-mail. Please see the question "What is VBNet's mail server address?" for the address of that server.

Q: What is DHCP? Why does VBNet use it?
A:
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. VBNet uses it to ease the distribution of IP addresses which are needed to connect to the Internet. This means that once a customer's ethernet jack is enabled for high-speed access, the customer just needs to plug in his computer and reboot and Windows and Macintosh computers, unless they are configured otherwise, will use DHCP to get an IP address. This allows the customer to get up and running as quickly as possible.

Q: Does VBNet have a news server?
A: No, VBNet does not have a news server. We recommend that you visit a web site like www.dejanews.com for newsgroup access.

Q: I get this "IP Address conflict" error message. How do I fix it?
A:
In order to help us provide the best service to you, please write down the error message in its entirety. Then, please call our technical support number at 407-996-8002 and we'll help you solve the problem.
